MERRILLVILLE, IN — Nine Hobart families displaced by the condemned East Street apartments received four additional nights at the Comfort Suites hotel in Merrillville. Regional Care Group members—Regional Health Systems and Geminus Corporation—donated the accommodations, giving the families extra time to find housing.
“We’re thankful for the donation from Regional Care Group’s member organizations,” said Joe Clemmons, board president of Hobart Township. “Their donation helped these families deal with this emergency situation.”
The families found themselves homeless after being evacuated from their apartment building on Monday, July 11. The city of Hobart deemed the apartment building a hazard for fire and public health.
Hobart Township staff struck a deal with the Merrillville hotel to rent the rooms at a discounted rate. Accommodations—at no cost to the families—were set to end July 15 as funds and donations became exhausted.
“We wanted the families to have a safe place to stay over the weekend as the community rallied to find them a permanent housing solution,” said Bill Trowbridge, CEO of Regional Care Group. “We’re grateful for Hobart Township reaching out to us to provide much needed community assistance.”
The donation extends the families’ stay through Tuesday, July 19.
